In February 2017, Council approved an agreement with The Perfect Patch Asphalt Company, Inc. (Perfect Patch), for the Zuni Street Sidewalk and Pedestrian Crossing Improvements adjacent to the park site and an agreement with Critical Path Ltd., to construct a 52-space parking lot.

Perfect Patch started construction of the sidewalk and pedestrian crossings in early March and completed the work in mid-April.

Parking lot construction will occur from May through July 2017.

PLEASE NOTE: Natural materials such as logs, boulders, and soil are being imported from other project sites and stockpiled on the property. This results in a substantial cost savings compared to purchasing the materials and enables funding of other site amenities shown in the plan. A large quantity of dirt will be hauled to the site and stockpiled between February 23 and March 17. Trucks will access the site from West 138th Avenue. The dirt will be used to build nature play features in the park. Construction of these features is anticipated to start in summer 2017.

McKay-Lambertson Phase 1 Plan area

The McKay/Lambertson Open Lands Master Plan area is 43.8 acres of undeveloped open land next to the McKay Lake Open Space (which is in the City of Westminster) and located northeast of West 138th Avenue and Zuni Street.

The highest priority features of the overall master plan concept for the area were incorporated into a 16-acre Phase 1 Plan. It includes a balance of active and passive uses immediately west and south of McKay Lake. The intent of the Phase 1 Plan is to provide public recreational opportunities, park amenities, trails, environmental education facilities, and an open space buffer with habitat enhancements

Background and Current Status:

Broomfield’s Open Space, Parks, Recreation, and Trails Master Plan identified the area for potential park improvements and open space preservation and includes regional trail connections across the property.

In 2013, an overall master plan concept was completed for the entire McKay/Lambertson Open Lands area. The City Council directed staff to work with residents that serve on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) and the Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (OSTAC).to create a stand-alone master plan for Phase 1 improvements (Phase 1 Plan) that can be built with only the McKay Landing development contribution toward a regional park ($1,381,083).

In 2014, a Phase 1 Plan was developed with extensive community input and involvement. City Council heard a presentation on the Phase 1 Plan at its Study Session on March 17, 2015.

On August 25, 2015, City Council unanimously approved a consulting agreement with Root House, LLC, for the Phase 1 design. Design processes began in September 2015. Construction documents will tentatively be completed in July 2016. With approval from City Council, staff will then bid the Phase 1 project for construction.

October 22 and 27, 2015 - Broomfield staff met with Root House, LLC and several subject matter experts in the bike park, adaptive sports, fitness and play industries to discuss schematic and conceptual design of features to be included in the Phase 1 Plan. Members of PRAC, OSTAC, and local community members with expertise in these areas were also invited to share their personal experiences, ideas, and comments.

On November 18, 2015, and on April 28, 2016, the PRAC and OSTAC met to review and discuss the McKay/Lambertson Open Lands Phase 1 park design. See online survey results below. Representatives from Root House Studio, LLC presented the plan vision to create something truly unique to encourage people to be active outdoors. The conceptual park design reflects the four major regional landscapes of Colorado; the plains, riparian zones, foothills, and the Rocky Mountains. Natural materials will be used to create unique spaces conducive to many types of outdoor activity and play. Committee members and the public provided valuable feedback about the proposed plan.

On June 22, 2016, a public open house was held to present construction plans for the project.

March 24, 2017:

Broomfield receives $350,000 from GOCO to build universally accessible nature play park

DENVER – The Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Board awarded the City and County of Broomfield a $350,000 local parks and outdoor recreation grant to build a 15-acre nature play and education facility accessible by children and adults of all ages and social, physical, and intellectual abilities. 

The park overlooks McKay Lake and will include nature play features constructed of natural materials that can be used by children and families and create a close-to-home space to connect with nature.

GOCO funding will help Broomfield build a bike park, nature fitness course, pavilion for environmental education and picnics, a habitat buffer by McKay Lake, and more than a mile of access paths connecting to the existing McKay Lake Trail. The project will also build a nature-inspired adventure playground with play zones resembling a prairie dog burrow, beaver dam, raptor’s nest, spider web, and other elements of nature.

The new amenities will be at least ADA-accessible, with many parts adhering to broader universal accessibility guidelines to ensure residents of all abilities can enjoy the new park.

The project will engage local high school students and leverage partnerships with Craig Hospital, Butterfly Pavilion, Broomfield Open Space Foundation, Broomfield Community Foundation, and the City of Westminster. Broomfield aims to have the park complete by fall 2018.

To date, GOCO has invested more than $500,000 in the City and County of Broomfield, supporting Northmoor Park and Ruth Roberts Open Space, among other projects.
