What
is Milling?
Milling a street is the process of removing a specific amount of
asphalt from the street in preparation for installing a new top section of
asphalt on the street or an additional section of asphalt called an
overlay. Why
is milling done?
When a new subdivision is built, all the construction traffic for
the new homes is concentrated in the new subdivision. This is a large amount of traffic, and this type of traffic
does considerable damage to the surface of the street. If left this way a new street would look ten years older in
one construction season. When
is milling done?
To combat this problem it is the City’s requirements that the
final surface, or top lift, of asphalt not be installed until 80% of the
homes in a new subdivision are completed.
The streets are constructed with the full design thickness, but
with a 1% crown in the center. When
the top lift is installed the street will have a 2% crown in the center.
This is why the edge of the street is milled down and not the
entire street. How
long will this take?
This depends on the amount of work to be done. Construction crews are required to post “No Parking”
signs along the street 24 hours before starting the milling and paving.
In some cases the street will be milled and then repairs to the
concrete sidewalks must be made before doing the asphalt overlay or top
lift. However, the “No
Parking” signs should be removed until the asphalt work will start and
again have a 24 hour notice before starting on the overlay. Please Check back, we update this page as new items come in This page was last updated on Friday, October 01, 2004 . | |||||||||||||||
