The work, City of Rainbows,
represents the harmony that can come from diversity. The name
occurred to me somewhere early in the design process; at the time,
I did not assign a conscious meaning to it.
Its colors are strong, distinct and
separate – like the different cultures and groups in our community.
They could clash when placed together in a confined space, except
that they are arranged harmoniously in the natural order of the
colors of the rainbow. Its shapes, like the unique cultures in our
community, are multi-dimensional (curved), overlapping each other.
Finally, the piece has an overall
harmonious feel to the color scheme and design, an effect our city
should try to engender among its diverse population.
The piece was originally
free-standing but circumstances demanded that it hang on the wall,
so I had to re-design it slightly to fit space and location
constraints – just as the physical designs of our neighborhoods and
public areas influence our thinking and require us to adjust our
individual behavior.
The meaning I describe evolved as
the piece was being created, judged, purchased, and refitted for
installation. Perhaps I was subconsciously aware of this meaning
all along, but could not explicate it until after installation.
After all, I have always believed in the value of cultural diversity
– perhaps this creation is an unconscious extension of the artist’s
worldview.
If these ideas are consistent with
your beliefs, then my meaning may work for you. If not, you are
free to assign your own meaning. Your unique perspective adds to
the total effect of this public art. That’s the value of diverse
thought. |
