Broomfield has been
interested and involved in the monitoring of the
Rocky Flats
Environmental Technology Site (RFETS) since the early 1970's. Broomfield City Council
has representatives on the Rocky Flats
Stewardship Council Board of Directors.
After a rigorous cleanup and closure of the site, Rocky Flats was de-listed
from the Superfund National
Priorities List for environmental clean up in 2007. All of the buildings
have been demolished and the site is being restored and revegetated to its
natural state. Kaiser-Hill announced that physical closure of the site was
complete October 13, 2005. Regulatory closure documents are
filed and approved in 2007. The site has been
turned over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to manage as a wildlife
refuge.
