Recycling Drop-off
Open 7 days a week/24 hours a day to Broomfield residents!
(Tree limb drop-off is open limited hours: Wednesdays, 1 to 5 p.m.
and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Broomfield continues to evaluate methods to reduce operational cost and protect the environment at the Broomfield
Recycling and Education Center. To simplify recycling operations at the center, there will only be
five bins to use for
your recyclables. The bins will be designated as follows:
- cardboard
- newspaper
- office paper
- commingled material (two side-by-side bins available)
The list of acceptable commingled items provides more details about what materials will
go into the commingled bin.
Other more difficult recyclables such as textiles and
books can also be dropped at the Center.
The reduction in the number of containers will create a cleaner and less
congested site when you drop off your materials. The use of two compactors
will reduce the amount of hauls needed by one-third and reduce our carbon
footprint to protect the environment. Broomfield continues to be committed
to provide excellent services for our community.

Did you know. . .
that when you put cardboard, bags, or other materials in the office paper bin at the Broomfield Recycling Center,
the load becomes CONTAMINATED? Even low levels of contamination result in more work for those processing the recyclables,
which ultimately drives up costs to operate the center.
High levels of contamination could result in your recycling efforts being lost because the load could end up in the
landfill rather than being recycled into useful materials.
Office paper is currently a valuable commodity that could help to fund the recycling center's operation. The value
of the material would help to pay for the hauling and recycling of all of the other materials. When the office paper is
contaminated by mixing in other materials, it loses most of its value.
So please: Read the signs carefully and put only the materials listed in their respective bins. It is especially
important that you put only white or light-colored (pastel) office paper in the office paper bin.
If you've carried your materials to the center in plastic bags of any kind, please empty the materials from the
bags and then reuse the bags for your next visit, or recycle plastic grocery bags at any participating store.

Did you know. . .
Plastics with the recycling numbers of 1-7 are accepted at the Broomfield Recycling Center. Did you know that
some are safer than others for storing and especially heating foods and beverages?
Containers labeled 1, 2, 4, and 5 are safer; 3, 6, and 7 are less safe. The "less safe" plastics can
contain BisPhenol A or phthalates.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used to make a strong plastic called polycarbonate that is used in many things
like drinking bottles. BPA has been associated with increases in developmental disorders of the brain and nervous
system in animals, similar to problems such as ADHD (attention deficit
hyper-reactivity disorder) in humans.
Phthalates are manmade chemicals used in many different products,
like toys and bottles, to make plastics flexible. In children, scientists have found an association between phthalates and
changes in reproductive hormones and increased allergies, runny nose, and eczema.
How to avoid Phthalates and BPA:
- Do not microwave food/beverages in plastic.
- Do not microwave or heat plastic cling wraps.
- Do not place plastics in the dishwasher.
- If using hard polycarbonate plastics (water bottles/baby bottles/sippy cups), do not use for warm/hot liquids.
- Use safe alternatives such as glass or polyethylene plastic (symbol #1).
- Look for labels on products that say “phthalate-free” or “BPA-free.”
