Purchasing vehicles and equipment is an important responsibility of the
Fleet Division.
Based on a set of criteria, the Fleet Division determines what vehicles need to be replaced. These purchases are figured
into the budget for the coming year. When the budget is approved, staff solicits either quotes or bids, depending
on the cost of the item.
The Fleet Division takes delivery of all purchases and pertinent information on the item is entered into a maintenance
software system. Mileage is tracked in this software, and the software works with a fueling system to put fueling controls
in place. Mileage is the determining factor in the preventative maintenance program.
With a strong preventative maintenance program, Fleet staff almost
always find a problem before a failure. The division's
aggressive preventative maintenance schedule means that most vehicles are used for at least 100,000 miles before replacement.
