Broomfield incorporated as a city in 1961 and established a home-rule,
Council-Manager form of government by charter in 1974.
Government: Under the home-rule system, policy is set by a 10-member
city council and the mayor. Day-to-day administration is carried out by a
professional city manager hired by the City Council. The city manager is
assisted by his team of professional department directors.
Two City Council members are elected from each of five city wards and
serve staggered four year terms. The mayor is elected at-large for a
two-year term. Elections are held every two years.
The City Council meets at the city administration offices every second
and fourth Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Council meetings are open to the public,
and you are encouraged to attend. City laws are codified, and consist of
the city's ordinances. All new ordinances require postings in designated
facilities, publication in one of the local newspapers, and at least one
public hearing before they are adopted. Citizens are encouraged to
participate in public hearings. They are scheduled during regular or
special city council meetings.
