Release Broomfield HHS seeks adult mentors Nicholson, Spencer and Associates Training Institute will collaborate with Broomfield Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop a mentoring program for youth in Broomfield. This program matches adult mentors with at-risk youth, 4th to 8th grade, who share similar interests and where the youth are in jeopardy of educational failure, lack a strong role model, or may be at risk of becoming involved in the juvenile justice. Adult mentors must be over 21 years old and must complete a screening process, training and make a one year commitment to the child with whom they are matched. The mentor is required to spend approximately two hours per week of face-to-face contact with the child and make phone contact each week. The next program orientation is set for April 24th at 6 p.m. at Broomfield Health and Human Services, #6 Garden Center. Interested individuals should contact Gordon Walker by phone at 720-887-2214 or by e-mail at gwalker@ci.broomfield.co.us . The program is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. There are opportunities for everyone involved in a mentoring program. For the mentor, this is an opportunity to give back to the community by building a relationship and being a strong role model to a Broomfield youth. For the youth, this program provides the opportunity to learn from a positive relationship and gain some stability in his/her life. Mentoring’s impacts spread beyond the mentor and youth. A small investment of a mentor’s time will pay lasting dividends for the mentor, the youth, the youth’s family and the community. | ||||||||
