Release Briefs Child safety event Broomfield’s Health and Human Services Department, Police Department and Luncheon Optimist Club will be sponsoring a child safety event at 6 Garden Center on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Offered will be car seat safety inspections to insure that car seats for children are installed properly, child fingerprinting and the annual Broomfield Luncheon Optimist’s bike rodeo. Women’s Wellness Walk May 14 Women of all ages are encouraged to focus on personal health during National Women’s Health Week May 11-17. Many of the leading diseases affecting women, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes can be successfully prevented or treated if detected early. The Health and Human Service Department, in collaboration with the Broomfield Recreation Center, will lead a 1 or 2 mile wellness walk for women of all ages and walking levels on Wednesday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. The walk will start from the Broomfield Recreation Center. There is no charge for this event. Bring walking shoes, water and join fellow community members for some fun. West Nile Virus and Mosquito Control Seminar Residents are reminded to attend a seminar on West Nile Virus and Broomfield’s mosquito control program on Saturday, May 3 from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Eisenhower Room on the second floor of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library in Broomfield. Mike McGinnis from Colorado Mosquito Control will provide up-to-date information on the prevention of West Nile Virus. Plant Talk can also be accessed on the web at http://www.planttalk.org Use Tax seminar schedule for contractors, residents, suppliers On Tuesday, May 13 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Broomfield’s Building Department and the Revenue Division of Finance, will host a seminar to explain Broomfield’s building and construction material use taxes, from the contractor, homeowner, and supplier perspectives. Classes will include the building permit process, calculation of use tax deposits, how to exempt city and county use tax when purchasing materials, reporting costs on completed projects, documentation needed for audits, registration of “exempt” construction projects, and personal property tax declarations. Waterwise workshops Plan now to attend one of two sessions on waterwise gardening. Workshop dates are June 12 at 7 p.m. and June 14, 9 a.m. to noon. The same information will be presented at both sessions. Workshops are at the Broomfield Recycling Center, 225 Commerce St., and will be conducted by Carol Bylsma, Broomfield’s CSU Extension Agent. CSU Extension’s first annual gardening series begins in Broomfield The first annual Broomfield gardening series presented by Colorado State University Cooperative Extension in Broomfield begins in May. All residents are invited to attend. Thursday, May 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about X-rated plants -- What flowers, trees and shrubs are best in a xeriscape garden, about Plant Select varieties and how to find the best ones for your garden. Presenter is Jini Bates, Landscape Designer and Master Gardener.Thursday, May 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Baffled about bluegrass, buffalo grass or tall fescue? What is the best turf for an X-rated landscape? Learn about pros and cons of turf varieties, care and maintenance. Presenter is Jini Bates, Landscape Designer and Master Gardener. Thursday, May 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will get an introduction to the insect pests in gardens: what they are, how they bug you, and how to control with integrated pest management. Presenter is Carol O’Meara, Boulder County Cooperative Extension Horticulturist and Entomologist Thursday, June 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The topic for this session is Butterfly Gardening. Attendees will learn how to create a magical place and space for butterflies and other beneficial insects. Learn about plant selection, care and maintenance, life cycles and identification of butterflies and more. Presenter is Carol Bylsma, avid butterfly gardener and director of the CSU Cooperative Extension in Broomfield. Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn about water-wise sprinkler design and installation in this special four hour “How-To” workshop. It will have you retro-fitting an existing system or installing a new “Smart” system in no time. Presenter is Charlotte Plaut, Colorado State University instructor and landscape irrigation design professional. Cost: $40.00 for the entire series if purchased in advance. Individual sessions are $12 at the door, except for Sprinkler Design and Irrigation, which is $30.00 at the door. The trainings are all related to working with youth or the problems of youth. The trainings are being supported by grant funding, so are free of charge to the community. Suicide Prevention Training May 6, 2003 and June 17, 2003 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. - Broomfield Health and Human Services, Broadlands Conference Room, 6 Garden Center, second floor. A good training for anyone working, living, or interacting with youth. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for the young population. The participant will leave this training with materials and information about prevention, intervention and local resources. ASSIST Training: Gatekeeper Model of Suicide Prevention May 12 – 13, 2003 8:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - St. Vrain Valley School District, Learning Services Center, 401 S. Pratt Parkway, Longmont This training offers individuals more extensive information about recognizing and interveneing with youth’s suicidal thoughts. The training targets gatekeepers, or people who typically have regular interaction with youth. Restorative Justice Conferencing May 30, 2003 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - Broomfield Library This is a skills training for current or potential community facilitators. The customized course offers participants a chance to broaden and deepen their skills in working with restorative justice conferences. Participants can expect to gain a clear understanding of their own strengths and areas of development as a facilitator, and the capacity to manage a difficult conferencing situation. This training will be required for volunteers who want to faciliitate justice system cases. Using Conferencing in Child Welfare June 9 – 10, 2003 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Broomfield Library This is a skills training that will provide the participant with facilitation knowledge and experience. Conferencing in the child welfare system serves to empower families by recognizing the strengths of the group. Participants will learn why family conferencing is a good idea, and the different approach and skills involved in this type of conference. Restorative Justice Circles June 27 – 28, 2003 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Broomfield Library This training will introduce the restorative justice circle process, which can be applied in a variety of settings including schools, faith-based communities, businesses, and many others. Participants in this highly experiential training will learn the role of “keeper”, the importance of the “talking piece,” and the design and use of circles.
