Media Release October 21, 2002 Broomfield seeks applicants Broomfield residents wishing to serve as volunteers on boards or commissions have until Friday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. to apply. Interested residents can obtain an application at the City Clerk’s office, 1 DesCombes Dr., or retrieve one off of the Web site at ci.broomfield.co.us/council/board_commisionsform3.pdf. Vacancies will occur on 10 of the volunteer advisory groups at the end of the year. Applicants must be residents of Broomfield. After applications are received, interviews will be scheduled for Monday, Nov. 18 and Monday, Nov. 25, if necessary. Appointments will be made at the regular city council meeting on Dec. 10. Terms begin January 1, 2003. There are three seats open on the Land Use Review Commission: one member for a four-year term ending Dec. 31, 2006; one member to complete a four-year term ending Dec. 31, 2005 and an alternate member for a one-year term ending Dec. 31, 2003. Land Use commissioners are appointed by ward, so residents in Wards 1, 4 and 5 are encouraged to apply. The Land Use Review Commission reviews and makes recommendations to city council on rezoning requests, subdivision plats, PUD’s and special review applications. Residents are needed to serve on the Zoning Board of Adjustment to hear and decide appeals for variances from the zoning ordinances. To be filled are two, three-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2005. There is also a vacancy for an alternate member for a term of one year ending Dec. 31, 2003. The Building and Construction Review Board needs two members. This board hears and decides appeals of the building and construction uniform codes. One opening is for a term of three years ending Dec. 31, 2005. There is also a vacancy for an alternate member for a one-year term ending Dec. 31, 2003. There are two vacancies on the Library Board for three-year terms that end Dec. 31, 2005. Library board members serve as advisors regarding the operations of the library. Personnel Merit Commission members have final jurisdiction and final authority to hear and determine appeals by any aggrieved employee who has been subject to disciplinary action of any kind. One member is needed for a three-year term ending Dec. 31, 2005. There is also a vacancy for an alternate member for a one-year term ending Dec. 31, 2003. Three members are needed on the Local Licensing Authority for two-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2004. There is also a vacancy for an alternate member for a one-year term ending Dec. 31, 2003. The Licensing Authority exercises the authority to grant or to refuse licenses for the sale at retail of malt, vinous or spirituous liquors or 3.2 percent fermented malt beverages. It also conducts investigations and can suspend or revoke licenses for cause. The Open Space And Trails Advisory Committee needs one member for a term of three years ending Dec. 31, 2005; and two members for one-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2003. The Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee advises city council on amendments to the open space element of the master plan. The committee is charged with making recommendations about the acquisition of open space parcels, the location, type, and timing of all trail segments and crossings, and a long-range plan for open space use and management. Two citizen members for three-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2005 are needed on theCultural Council. This group oversees the Cultural Master Plan for the development and maintenance of scientific and cultural opportunities in the city. It also develops a grant-making process and an annual funding plan for distribution of Tier III Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) funds in Broomfield for city council approval, and serves as a liaison between local scientific and cultural organizations and agencies, the SCFD board of directors and city council. The county Board of Equalization reviews property valuations for assessment of all taxable property as determined by the assessor. It hears individual taxpayer appeals of the assessor’s decisions, reviews recommendations of qualified hearing officers and approves or rejects their recommendations for valuations, and hears abatement requests and appeals of the assessor’s decisions for Senior Property Tax Exemptions. The Board needs two members for two-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2004.Broomfield’s Health and Human Services Advisory Committee is a new committee. It consists of 15 members serving two-year overlapping terms. Recently, city council voted to abolish the former Human Services Advisory Committee and the Public Health Advisory Committee as separate committees, effective Dec. 31, 2002. The new Health and Human Services Advisory Committee will go into effect Jan. 1, 2003, to be advisory to the Department of Health and Human Services. Members of the former Human Services and Public Health Committees whose original terms expire Dec. 31, 2003, may continue as members of the Health and Human Services Advisory Committee. Appointments will be made for five members for two-year terms, commencing Jan. 1, 2003 and expiring Dec. 31, 2004. The Health and Human Services Advisory Committee advises the Health and Human Services Department on community needs and the implementation of integrated services to address these needs. It provides community input and feedback to the Department, serves as a "pool" for statutorily required board and commission memberships, encourages and promotes ongoing community involvement, communication, and education regarding HHS programs, and participates in specific, temporary task forces on select issues identified by the Health and Human Services Department.
