Art possibilities for new Derda Rec Center to be on display for public comment

Offerings from three artists selected as the finalists for the public art to be chosen to go into the new Paul Derda Recreation Center will be on display next week.

The three final proposals will be on display at the Broomfield Municipal Center, 1 DesCombes Dr., beginning Monday, Feb. 24 through Wednesday, Feb. 26. The building will be open until 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday for anyone who wishes to take a look.

Community Resources Director Hugh Brown is eager to have residents see what has been “in the works.”

“We’d like the public to view the proposals and offer their comments,” Brown said. Comment cards will be available.

As part of the construction of the new $21.5 million recreation center, public art was envisioned as a significant feature, Brown said. A committee of six citizens has narrowed the selection from the 15 proposals received since January.

“This artwork will be part of the 75-foot, heavily-used hallway leading to the swimming area and locker rooms,” Brown said. The public is invited to view the three proposals the committee has selected, and offer comment to be considered as part of their deliberations, he added. “The committee will consider what the public has to say when they meet to make the final choice that they will recommend to City Council,” Brown said.

The three proposals will be submitted to the City Council in March with a recommendation from the committee. The selected artwork will then be completed and installed by the artist in time for the opening of the new center in October.
