'Wildlife Master' classes set for March

Anyone interested in knowing more about urban wildlife may take advantage of the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension’s Wildlife Master Program that convenes in March in Broomfield. The program entails attending classes and a commitment to volunteer in the program after successful completion of the classes.

Applications are now being accepted for the program. The application form may be downloaded by visiting www.ci.broomfield.co.us/hhs/csu . For additional information or to receive an application in the mail, call Kerri at 720-887-2286 between 1 and 5 p.m.

Applications are due Friday, Feb. 13, 2004. Completed applications should be sent to: Wildlife Master Program, Cooperative Extension, City and County of Broomfield, #6 Garden Center, Broomfield, CO 80020. Selected applicants will be notified if they are chosen for the required interview before acceptance into the program.

The 2004 training for the selected volunteers will be Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Sill TerHar community room, 125 Alter Parkway in Broomfield. The cost of the training is $55. Materials are included in this price.

Questions that Wildlife Masters can answer every day are: How do I stop squirrels from chewing my trees? Something is tunneling under my sod. What could it be? How do I prevent raccoons from getting in my trash?

Wildlife Master volunteers share research-based information about wildlife in the urban environment. They provide insight into human-wildlife interactions and help resolve wildlife conflicts that arise.

Volunteers for the program are carefully selected for their willingness to be unbiased and provide the public with research-based options. Training provided to the volunteers draws on the expertise of several agencies including:

  • Colorado State University
  • the Colorado Division of Wildlife
  • the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Wildlife Research Center and Wildlife Service
  • the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
