Re-use system start-up event is Monday

A “Sprinkler Soiree” is planned Monday, April 26, 2004 at 2 p.m. in Community Park, 2nd Ave. and Main St.

Residents and any interested individuals are welcome to come to meet those involved in this conservation-minded project and see Mayor Karen Stuart officially start the sprinklers using Broomfield’s reclaimed water.

City Council, contractors and staff members will be on hand to celebrate this newest asset for Broomfield.

Broomfield’s Water Reclamation System takes effluent from the Wastewater Treatment Plant, treats it and reuses it for irrigation purposes.  The project began in 1994, and recent completion of the distribution system now allows reuse water to be used in local parks, landscaped areas and at Interlocken.

Over 1,200 acres will be irrigated with the reuse water.  At capacity, the program will yield 3,100 acre feet of water annually.

Reclaimed water is an asset that provides a reliable water source and lessens peak demands on the city’s Drinking Water Treatment Plant for potable water used to water lawns during the summer. The water from the Wastewater Plant will be reclaimed all year long, and,

during winter months, stored in Broomfield’s Great Western Reservoir east of Indiana and south of Colorado State Highway 128.

A new building located west of Simms St. near Great Western has been built.  There, water stored in the reservoir will be treated before it is released into the reclaimed water distribution system.  The treated, reclaimed water is then stored in water tanks at Jeffco Airport until it is needed for irrigation purposes.

Purple is the universal color for reclaimed water.  Signage and water system caps will be purple so that the public knows that water being used for irrigation in a park or recreational area is reclaimed water and not considered drinking water quality.
