Councilmember Buzek receives Certificate of Achievement

Broomfield Councilmember Vince Buzek was recently recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) after having completed that organization's Leadership Training Institute.  He was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Leadership at a luncheon in December during the NLC Congress of Cities in Indianapolis.

Councilmember Buzek was among 11 officials, and only three from Colorado, recognized for reaching the Gold Certificate level. At this level, Councilmember Buzek had to earn 50 credits, which usually takes about three years.

Councilmember Buzek represents Ward 3. His current term expires in 2007.

NLC is committed to strengthening and promoting the leadership capacity of the nation’s local elected officials.  As part of the NLC mission to create stronger communities, the Leadership Training Institute was established to provide local officials with professional development opportunities that accentuate the vital personal skills and abilities needed to facilitate positive change and innovation within their communities.

Participants must officially enroll in the program, which allows them to organize professional development around the critical skills necessary for excellence in leadership.  Participants are not charged a fee to participate in the program.

The Leadership Training Institute has developed the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program in an effort to recognize and acknowledge excellence in local government leadership.

Through this program, local elected officials are able to develop skills in five core competencies: cornerstone, competent practitioner, communicator, collaborator and catalyst.  According to NLC, local Leaders who advance in the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program will have completed training in the competencies necessary to lead into the twenty-first century.

Each competency area focuses on the essential leadership skills NLC considers necessary for local elected officials.  The competency areas include:

• Cornerstone: Personal Leadership Growth and Development - general leadership theory, personal leadership qualities and characteristics.
• Competent Practitioner: Leading Effective Governance - technical skills and knowledge specific to local government leaders.
• Communicator: Effective Communications and Media Relations - skill in effective interpersonal interaction.
• Collaborator: Building Communities through Inspiration and Empowerment - skill in developing and promoting partnerships.
• Catalyst: Leading Innovation and Managing Change - skill in motivating, promoting change, and future orientation.
