Ribbon cutting ceremony Broomfield officials will celebrate the successful completion of the Phase 1 Expansion and upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant on Tuesday, May 17 at 2 p.m. with ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The event will also highlight Broomfield’s 50 years of dedication to the prevention of water pollution and preservation of the environment. The Phase 1 expansion faced challenges that were solved with a collaboration between city staff and key participants in the project, including AnoxKaldnes Inc. of Rhode Island, Lillard and Clark Construction Co., and Black and Veatch Engineers. By upgrading the treatment plant to include an integrated fixed-film activated sludge system, the facility has succeeded in meeting more stringent discharge requirements for ammonia, phosphorus and nitrates without having to expand the size of its footprint. The project also allows the plant to increase its treatment capacity to 8 million gallons a day, up from 5.4 million gallons. The new system combines traditional activated sludge treatment technology with moving bed reactor treatment technology – a state-of-the-art method that saved Broomfield $4 million in construction costs. Construction costs for the Phase 1 expansion were $28.5 million. Later phases will address projected needs for growth as it occurs. The public is welcome to attend the ceremonies. The plant is located at 2895 West 124th Avenue in Broomfield.
