John Ferraro takes recreation helm

Longtime Broomfield resident and recreation talent John Ferraro has been promoted to Director of Recreation Services for the City and County of Broomfield.

Ferraro has a long history with Broomfield, starting here in 1975 as an intern and then taking a part time position after completing the internship.  In 1977, he was appointed athletic recreation leader, a full time position. He has been deputy director of recreation services since July of 2002.

Raised in Trinidad and graduating from high school there, Ferraro served in the U.S. Navy and attended the University of Colorado where he earned a BS degree in recreation management in 1974.

During his tenure in Broomfield, Ferraro has been instrumental in developing Broomfield ‘s recreation programs, especially youth sports.  His expertise can be found in the city’s adult softball, youth basketball, volleyball, track and Special Olympics efforts.

Ferraro has also been successful as a coach in many sports, and has implemented coach training programs for Broomfield to provide consistency among the many volunteer coaches who serve Broomfield recreation.

A volunteer himself, Ferraro has spent much of his free time coaching young people. Most recently, he has been the girls golf coach for Broomfield High School the last two years. He also served a term as president of the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association in 2000-2001.

In announcing the promotion, Hugh Brown, director of Community Resources, lauded Ferraro as “enthusiastic and energetic about his job, his profession, the City and County organization and the community.  John strongly believes in building partnerships, and his experience shows this.”  Ferraro assumes the duties of Bob Prince, who retired in June.

Ferraro is now responsible for Recreation Service's $4 million budget and recreation facilities including the Paul Derda Recreation Center, Community Center, Bay outdoor aquatic park, the skate park and batting cage facility, in addition to over 60 athletic fields.

Ferraro, 57, his wife Nancy and their three children reside in Broomfield.
