Child safety event set for May 20
Broomfield’s
Health and Human Services Department (HHS) is hosting its annual
child safety event Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in
the Target parking lot, 1660 W. Midway.
Joining HHS
and Target are the North Metro Fire Rescue District, Broomfield
Police Department, Broomfield Recreation Services and the Denver
Museum of Nature and Science.
Unintentional childhood injury is the number one killer of
children under 14. Examples include bike injury, burn injury,
drowning, fire injury, poisoning, injuries caused by inadequate
or improperly installed car seats, and many more. For this
reason, the day’s activities center on child safety issues: sun
exposure, helmets, water safety, fire, car seats, poison and gun
safety.
Children
will be able to make themselves a visor to keep them safe in the
sun. Activities led by the Denver museum will teach kids about
helmets and how they protect from brain injury. Another activity
will teach children how to distinguish between poison and candy.
Kids can also have fun dressing up like a police officer, or
tour a North Metro Fire Rescue fire engine.
This event
is also designed to be informative for parents. Free child car
seat safety inspections will be available, and attendees can
sign up to win one of two child safety seats donated by Target
of Broomfield.
A public
health nurse will be on hand to check shot records and give
general information about immunizations. Examples of approved
flotation devices for children will be on hand. Information will
also be available on West Nile Virus and Avian Flu.
