Broomfield officials recognized by NLC leadership;
among first to achieve leadership training honor
BROOMFIELD - Mayor Karen Stuart and Council Member Vincent J. Buzek were
recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) on December 7, 2005 as among
the first local elected officials to achieve the Platinum Level of its
Certificate of Achievement in Leadership award program. Sponsored by the NLC
Leadership Training Institute, only 30 leaders in the nation achieved the
platinum level this year.
The two received their awards from the NLC Leadership Training Council at the
annual Congress of Cities conference, held in Charlotte, NC.
Both Stuart and Buzek earned over 80 credits in all five of the core
competencies necessary to reach the Platinum Level by successfully completing
leadership development and training programs. Platinum Certificate recipients
are also required to serve in NLC or other national leadership roles. Stuart
has served on the National League of Cities’ Transportation and Infrastructure
Steering Committee since 2001. Buzek has served as a member of the National
League of Cities’ Leadership Training Council since 2002 and is also a member
of NLC’s Policy Safety and Crime Prevention Steering Committee.
“As part of the NLC mission to create stronger communities, the Leadership
Training Institute provides local city officials with professional development
opportunities to assist them in promoting positive change and innovation
within their local communities,” said Donald J. Borut, NLC’s executive
director. “Completing the LTI courses and achieving this certificate is
evidence of the high level of commitment that Mayor Stuart and Council Member
Buzek have to staying on the cutting edge of local governance.”
The certificate program for local elected officials through NLC focuses on
work to develop skills necessary for effective leadership and personal
development. Platinum level participants must complete a minimum of 67 credits
in all core competency areas, which include managing change, developing
partnerships, effective communications, technical knowledge and personal
leadership skills and development.
