New this year: city-wide Spring Clean-Up
features free curb side pick-up in May

Broomfield’s popular Spring Clean-Up event is back this year in a new format so residents won’t have to haul their no longer wanted, oversized materials to a drop-off location.

Instead, Broomfield has been divided into specific areas, and the city has contracted with Western Disposal to pick up items placed curbside on one Saturday in each area in May.

The free curbside pick-up is for any large, non-hazardous items that cannot be set out for normal trash pickup. Dates for the cleanup are May 6, 13 and 20. To find out which day is scheduled for your neighborhood, check the Broomfield Enterprise for the map to be published beginning next week or visit online at Broomfield.org.

All Spring Clean-Up items must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the designated Saturday. Western Disposal will not return to a neighborhood for items not placed at the curb by 7 a.m.

Please do not include any household hazardous waste.  Broomfield’s separate Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day is May 20, by appointment only. For more information about this important service, or to make an appointment, please call 303-438-6336.

Also new to the cleanup this year is a recycling component. Western Disposal will sort and recycle from the discards collected scrap metal, unpainted and untreated wood items, and electronic waste. All other items collected will be disposed of as garbage in the solid waste landfill.

Please consider saving any re-usable items, and donating them to charity. Contact the local Habitat for Humanity, the ARC Thrift Store, or your favorite charity to find out what they can accept for donation

Here are the “rules” for residents who wish to participate in this event.

When placing items at the curb, please take care not to block sidewalks or driveways.  Items stacked in driveways will not be picked up.  Oversized items need to be disassembled so they can be lifted by no more than two people. Items that are too heavy for two people to lift cannot be removed.

Acceptable items include:

·         Scrap lumber, scrap metal, carpet, wood doors, glass doors, cabinets, drywall;

·         small appliances, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, microwave ovens, hot water heaters;

·         barbeques if they have the propane tanks removed;

·         up to four tires maximum from a passenger-vehicle only, auto parts.

·         combustible engines and transmissions if they are drained of all liquids and disassembled into parts weighing less than 100 pounds each.

These Items will NOT be picked up:

·         any appliance with a Freon unit, such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners;

·         liquid waste of any kind;

·         any single item that cannot be lifted by two people;

·         car bodies, car batteries, antifreeze, motor oil;

·         propane tanks from barbeques;

·         sealed containers or drums; any items listed as a hazardous material; any corrosives, flammable or combustible liquids; pesticides, herbicides, paint;

·         business, commercial, industrial or agricultural waste, or household trash;

·         concrete, soil or sod, grass clippings;

 All items must be marked “Broomfield Clean-Up.”  Broken glass must be boxed and secured with tape.  All other items should be stacked, bagged, boxed or bundled and placed parallel with the sidewalk at the curb.  Please remember to secure or remove doors on any item that may pose a safety hazard to small children or animals.

Your tax dollars are at work! The 2006 Spring Clean Up is funded by the City and County of Broomfield as a public service for Broomfield households only.

The program aims to keep neighborhoods free of unsightly debris, reduce fire hazards from material stored in garages and basements, and reduce illegal dumping of large debris on roads.  Business debris, large quantities of construction debris or items from outside Broomfield city limits will not be picked up. If you have any questions or comments, call 303-438-6334.
