Senior
property tax exemption Assessor Vickie Brown is advising Broomfield residents of the re-institution of the senior citizen homestead property tax exemption, and the July 17 deadline for applications. The Colorado General Assembly has reinstated the senior citizen homestead tax exemption for homeowners age 65 as of January 1, 2006, who have lived in their homes for at least 10 years, and who apply for the exemption. A surviving spouse of a senior who qualified for the exemption may also be eligible to apply. This exemption is for 2006 taxes payable in 2007. Deadline for application is Monday, July 17, 2006. Those who have applied for the exemption for prior years do not need to re-apply, Brown said. Those who qualify will receive a 50 percent exemption of taxes due on the first $200,000 in actual value of their primary residence. The state then pays the exempted portion of the property tax. To receive the exemption, eligible homeowners must file an application with the county assessor. Contact the assessor at One DesCombes Drive by July 17 to apply. Brown said in 2003, the state Legislature temporarily suspended funding for the senior property tax exemption program. The Legislature approved funding this year, and the refund will be reflected on the property tax bills received by homeowners in January, 2007. Applications and information brochures are located in the Central Records office at One DesCombes Drive, or they can be downloaded from the assessor's Web site at http://www.broomfield.org/assessor/senior.shtml. Those who are not sure if the assessor has received their application should contact the Central Records Office at 303-464-5819. What happens to the Broomfield program? During the
interim when the state did not fund the exemption, the City and
County of Broomfield funded an exemption for residents of the
city’s portion of property taxes. The funding for Broomfield’s
program for taxes paid in 2006 is currently scheduled to go before
the City Council in July, with final approval in August. If
approved, the refund to all qualified Broomfield homeowners who
meet all the requirements of the homestead exemption will be
distributed in September. | ||||||||
