Brighten someone’s holiday; join Broomfield employees in giving tree effort this holiday season

Broomfield employees are inviting residents to join them in a Giving Tree effort this holiday season.

Employees have sponsored a Giving Tree during the holiday season for the last six years to help families and seniors who are less fortunate. This year, they are inviting the public to participate with them.

Residents who wish to participate can visit the lobbies of the City and County Building, Paul Derda Recreation Center, Broomfield Community Center and Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library.

There, they will find a tree “decorated” with gift tags that are coded to identify a family member of one of the selected families, and the gift request. Families to benefit from the program are referred anonymously from Broomfield FISH, Health and Human Services and the Broomfield Senior Center.

Residents can select a tag from the tree, purchase the gift listed, and return it, unwrapped and with the tag, to the place where they took the tag.

Broomfield employees will deliver the gift to the appropriate family. This year, “Santa Cops” will also help by delivering gifts to Broomfield children who have been identified as needing a positive relationship with a police officer.

Deadline to return the gifts and tags is Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Residents who would prefer can also donate money or gift cards.  Drop them off at the Community Assistance Center in the lobby of the City and County Building, 1 DesCombes Dr.

Employees are also suggesting that anyone hosting a holiday gathering consider asking guests to bring an item to donate to the giving tree instead of the traditional host gift.

In years past, the Broomfield Police Department has participated in the KYGO Christmas Crusade for Children, and employees participated in the Share A Gift program. When Broomfield was becoming a combined city and county, employees decided to fashion their own program to help needy Broomfield families and seniors have a nice holiday.  Employees adopted families and conducted silent auctions to raise funds for the project.  Last year, Broomfield employees helped Santa with nearly 200 gifts going to 33 people in eight families referred anonymously by Broomfield FISH.
