West Nile Virus info event: On June 25, Broomfield’s Environmental Services Division of Public Works, along with Health and Human Services and Colorado Mosquito Control, will sponsor a West Nile Virus/Integrated Pest Management Information event from 7 to 8 p.m. in Community Park, north of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library.   

This is an opportunity to find out what the city is doing to reduce summer mosquito populations and what can be done to protect from West Nile Virus.  The event is posted on the Broomfield Web page. Additional advertising for the event will be provided as the date draws near. 

Video marketing recognition:  Broomfield Recreation Services was recently highlighted in the LERN (Learning Resources Network) international organization’s electronic newsletter that goes to over 8,000 subscribing members. The newsletter gives tips for recreation professionals billed as “Information that Works.”   

In the newwsletter, Broomfield Recreation Service’s marketing efforts are listed as an example of video marketing, citing the division’s Channel 8-produced videos of various activities. 

Cleanup record: Over 2600 residents participated in the 2008 Spring Cleanup.  A total 429.93 tons of material was removed over the three Saturdays to clean up neighborhoods and reduce the fire load of material stored in garages and basements. 

Of the total tons of material collected, 77.97 tons of metal (up from 63.67 last year), 16.31 tons of wood waste (up from 12.85) and 8.2 tons of e-waste (up from 7.39) was recycled.  The recycling rate of 23.8 percent is greater than last year's rate of 17.7 percent.   

Phone lines open: Ask A Master Gardener phone lines are open for residents to call the Colorado Master Gardeners of Broomfield with questions related to their home yard, landscape or garden.  Master Gardeners are in the office from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, but the phone line is available to take messages 24-hours a day, and residents are encouraged to leave a message for a call-back.  The number for residents to call is 303.464.5554. 

In addition, the Colorado Master Gardeners of Broomfield will once again be at the Home Depot on the first and third Saturdays of every month, May through August, to answer gardening questions on a variety of topics.  Look for the Master Gardener Tent outside the store from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 21, July 5 and 19, August 2 and 16.
