Broomfield HHS plans back to school shots for kids during extended-hour clinics

Broomfield’s health clinic will extend its hours to offer immunizations for walk-ins on Tuesday, Aug. 20 and Thursday, Aug. 22 for children returning to school. The added hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on those days.

These clinics have been scheduled in addition to regular clinic hours: Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The clinic is located in the Broomfield Health and Human Services building at 6 Garden Center. Broomfield residents wishing to be seen in the HHS clinic during regular hours are encouraged to make an appointment by calling 720-887-2220.

Fee is $15 per immunization to cover administration costs. No child will be turned away for the inability to pay.

Colorado law requires that children show proof of age-appropriate immunizations as a condition to entering school. Such proof can be a paper document that includes information transferred from the records of a licensed physician, registered nurse, or public health official; or an electronic file or a hard copy of an electronic file provided to the school directly from the immunization tracking system.

Due to some national vaccine shortages, the Colorado Board of Health has continued the suspension of some doses of vaccine formerly required for school entry.

Currently, recommended doses of vaccine required for school entry include four or five doses of Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (DPT). The number depends on what age the doses were administered.

Also recommended are three or four doses of Polio, again depending on the age the doses were administered; two doses of Measles/Mumps/Rubella; a Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, again with dosing dependent upon the age first administered. It may vary from a single dose to four doses a child may have received.

Additionally recommended is a series of three Hepatitis B doses. One dose of Varicella is also recommended, to be administered on or after the first birthday. Alternative to Varicella is proof of a history of or immunity to the disease.

Those with additional questions regarding school entry requirements or other vaccine inquiries should contact Broomfield’s public health division at 720-887-2220.
