Real African Music performs here Feb. 19
The City and County of Broomfield Cultural Affairs Division invites the public to an exciting performance provided by Real African Music Feb. 19, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium.

Real African Music is part of the Kudzidza Foundations. The Kudzidza Foundation is working to establish and maintain a bridge of mutual education between the U.S. and Zimbabwe. In the Shona language of Zimbabwe, Kudzidza means "education". The foundation offers programs to support the lives of children and adults of Zimbabwe as well as other African communities. The African culture is about participation and Kudzidza wants America to participate. The performance will feature live music, drumming and dancing lead by authentic African performers.

Performers:
Bongo was the first of twelve children born in a remote village in Zimbabwe. His mother was a traditional healer and this is where Bongo began his musical career. After hearing stories from his grandmother, he began to listen to and he began to experiment with drum playing. He is now an accomplished drummer who wishes to share his background with all children. He grew up participating in song and drumming as a means of introducing himself to other children, for learning important lessons in life and for survival. He is also an accomplished sculptor who learned this trade from his Grandfather as a means to support his family.

Gweshe felt a spiritual calling at the age of fourteen. He sought out his Shona elders and acquainted himself with their spiritual gatherings and ceremonies. He formed The Boterekwa Dance Troupe 24 years ago. Gweshe is one of the first imbira musicians to have persuaded both the spirit world and his Shona elders to allow this instrument to be played outside of sacred, private Shona ceremonies.
The Boterekwa performing group was founded by Gweshe in 1977 as a kids group. The kids dance ensemble grew in strength and artistic know-how to become a world class dance company it is today. The group is one of Africa's leading and most accomplished dance troupes.

The group has dominated at international, regional and local Festivals winning first rate awards at most of the Festivals. The dance company cherishes the rich cultural heritage and back ground of the founder artistic director David Gweshe who is regarded as a leading exponent and custodian of arts and culture in Zimbabwe. The group under the guidance of Gweshe pioneered dance into schools during the 80s. The diversified professional dance troupe performs major regional and ethnic dances of Zimbabwe.

Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5 Seniors and Students and are available at the Broomfield Auditorium Box Office Thursdays and Fridays from 2-6 p.m.
