Birds of Prey Foundation Program

When: Saturday, September 25, 2010
Time: 2 to 3 p.m.
Where: Broomfield Community Center, 280 Lamar Street, in the Lakeshore Rooms

This presentation is sponsored by the City and County of Broomfield and the Broomfield Open Space Foundation.

The Birds of Prey Foundation staff will bring three to four live raptors such as hawks, owls, and falcons and provide an informal educational program about these fascinating creatures. Participants will have the opportunity to get a close-up view of the birds. Children are welcome but must be attended by an adult. The event is FREE.

The Birds of Prey Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Broomfield whose mission is:

  • Treating injured and orphaned wildlife, primarily raptors, such as eagles, hawks, falcons and owls and returning healthy members of the breeding population to their natural habitat; their natural habitat;
  • Fostering compassion for wildlife in distress and teaching new Owlgenerations through mentoring, internships, lectures, and volunteer programs;
  • Working to continuously improve the quality of care and housing of captive raptors everywhere through education; observation, invention and exemplary ethics in their treatment and husbandry;
  • Seeking protection for raptors in the wild through education, invention and intervention.

Presentation: Coyotes in Our Midst - Learning to Live with America's Wild "Song Dog" and Screening of the Film, "American Coyote - Still Wild at Heart"

Camilla Fox, Executive Director of Project Coyote and a wildlife consultant will make the presentation. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about coyotes in urban settings. For over 15 years, Camilla Fox,  Founder and Executive Director of Project Coyote, has worked to protect wildlife and wildlands in the U.S. and internationally. She has served in leadership positions with the Animal Protection Institute, Fur-Bearer Defenders, and Rainforest Action Network and has spearheaded campaigns aimed at protecting native carnivores and fostering humane and ecologically sound solutions to human-wildlife conflicts.

Camilla assists communities, agencies, wildlife managers, and non-governmental organizations in creating innovative solutions to help people and wildlife coexist. A frequent speaker on these issues, Camilla has authored more than 60 publications and is co-author of "Coyotes in Our Midst: Coexisting with an Adaptable and an Adaptable and CoyotesResilient Carnivore" and co-editor and lead author of the book, "Cull of the Wild: A Contemporary Analysis of Trapping in the United States." Her work on behalf of wildlife has been featured in several national and international media outlets including the German documentary, "Coyote: The Hunted Hunter; two North American documentaries: "American Coyote - Still Wild at Heart," and "On Nature’s Terms," as well as The New York Times, the BBC, NPR, Orion, USA Today magazine, and Bay Nature magazine.

Camilla holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies with a focus in Wildlife Conservation, Policy, and Ecology from Prescott College and a Bachelor’s degree from Boston University where she graduated magna cum laude in 1991. She has served as an appointed member on the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture's National Wildlife Services Advisory Committee and currently serves on several national and local advisory boards. In 2006, Camilla received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Marin Humane Society and the Christine Stevens Wildlife Award from the Animal Welfare Institute.


Broomfield Trail Adventure 2010!

The 9th annual Broomfield Trail Adventure took place on Saturday, June 5. The event was held in the Anthems Highland community in north Broomfield and highlighted the area's trail system. Around 400 people turned out to bike, walk, or run the various routes. Check out the routes that were selected.

This year's event was again in conjunction with the Children's Wellness Day, featuring a variety of educational activities and displays for children and adults.
