Coexistence with Wildlife Policy
In January and February 2009, two separate coyote attacks on humans
occurred in Broomfield. On March 24, 2009, City Council requested that
staff develop a policy that addresses not only coyote conflicts, but also
guidelines for wildlife issues and strategic actions to promote safe
coexistence with wildlife in the community.
Staff prepared a Draft Coexistence with Wildlife Policy (“Draft
Policy”). The purpose of the Draft Policy is: 1) to increase the
community’s knowledge and understanding of how to safely live with
wildlife; 2) to foster an appreciation and enjoyment of local wildlife;
and 3) to develop guidelines for response to conflicts with wildlife.
The Draft Policy includes the following sections: 1) an overview of
Broomfield’s wildlife habitat and conservation; 2) a Coexistence with
Coyotes Policy; 3) a summary of the existing Policies for Prairie Dog
Conservation and Management: 4) a Policy for Coexistence with other
Wildlife; and 5) recommendations for potential future ordinances and
guidelines.
The Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee, Parks and Recreation
Advisory Committee, and Colorado Division of Wildlife helped to develop
the Draft Policy.
The City Council reviewed the policy during a study session on April
20, 2010. There was a public open house on May 26, and additional
comments were solicited from attendees. Citizens were encouraged to send
comments online until May 31, as well.
OSTAC and PRAC discussed the draft Policy at
the joint meeting of the committees on July 22, and recommended that
staff present the Policy to City Council for adoption.
The Policy was reviewed at the August 24 City Council meeting and approved, with some minor edits. The
final
Coexistence with Wildlife Policy is now available for viewing.
