MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the
Open Space and Trails Division is to acquire and manage open space and create a comprehensive trail system so that each
citizen has the opportunity to experience the beauty of Broomfield’s natural environment and to walk or bike to a
variety of destinations.
Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (OSTAC)
The Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee is made up of seven citizen
members at large (appointed by city council), one ex officio, non-voting council member, and one ex officio alternate.
The OSTAC advises the city council on amendments to the open space element of the master plan. The committee is charged with
the responsibility of making recommendations to the city council regarding:
the acquisition of open space parcels;
the location, type and timing of trail segments and crossings, and;
the long-range plan for open space use and management.
The
next meeting of the OSTAC is scheduled for Thursday,
August 26, 2010 at 6 p.m. The
meeting will be in the Zang Spur Room, located on the lower level of the City & County Building at
1 DesCombes Drive.
June 2010: It's Pup Season for Coyotes! Be aware!
Coyotes are now raising their pups and can be
more
territorial as they guard their mates, dens, pups, and food sources. As the days become longer and people and their pets
spend more time outdoors, the possibility of a coyote interaction increases.
Find out how you can be safe and also enjoy seeing coyotes in the
community.
The Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (OSTAC), Parks and Recreation
Advisory Committee (PRAC), and Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) helped staff
develop a Draft Coexistence with
Wildlife Policy. The City Council reviewed the policy during a study
session on April 20, 2010. There was a public open house on May 26, and
additional comments were solicited from attendees. Citizens were
encouraged to send comments online until May 31, as well.
OSTAC and PRAC discussed the most current draft of the Policy at
the joint meeting of the committees on July 22 and recommended that
staff present the Policy to City Council for adoption.
Broomfield Trail Adventure 2010!
The 9th annual Broomfield Trail Adventure took place on Saturday, June 5.
The event was held in the Anthems Highland community in north Broomfield and highlighted the area's trail system.
Around 400 people turned out to bike, walk, or run the various routes.
This year's event was again in conjunction with the Children's Wellness Day, featuring a variety of educational
activities and displays for children and adults.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and businesses that made the event a successful one!
The Metzger Farm Open Space Master Plan was approved by City Council on March 9, 2010. Find out more about the
Master Plan.
