Moth mullein, Verbascum blattaria

 Characteristics:

Family: Scrophulariaceae (Figwort family)

Origin: Europe

Description:

  • Taprooted biennial with single stem (1.5'-5' tall)

Stems:

  • Single stemmed with a flower raceme at the top

Flowers:

  • Bright yellow, occasionally white with 5 petals that are 3/4" to 1 1/2" in width

Leaves:

  • Leaves are dark green with a red tinge, shallowly lobed and toothed tapering to a short stalk

Fruit:

  • Splitting open to release many seeds

  • Seed capsule very round and obvious

 

Additional information:

Easily found even in the Winter months because of the round seed pods.  Forms a rosette in the first year and then sends up the flower stalk in the second year.  Flowers May to September and is easily pulled from the ground as a possible means of control.
