Parks Division

Mowing operations
The Mowing and Trimming crew is responsible for mowing, trimming, edging, and weed mowing of greenbelts, traffic islands, athletic fields, right of ways, open space, weed areas, and parks. In winter, Parks Division personnel assist in snow and ice control on sidewalks and in the parking lots for parks and various city and county buildings.

Mowing and Trimming

Supervisor Bill Cooksey
Foreman Rick Sedbrook

These crews maintain over 790 acres of turf areas. With weekly to bi-weekly mowing, these crews figure they maintain nearly 24,000 acres yearly. Parks Division staff edge along approximately 90 miles of sidewalks every other week.

To maintain the quality residents have come to expect in landscape maintenance, Broomfield contracts with private firms to maintain approximately 27 percent of the improved landscaped areas in the city. The contractor's maintenance area includes East Park at Interlocken, areas around the 96th Street and East and West FlatIron Circle interchanges on US 36, Varra Park, the FlatIron Crossing perimeter and other improved landscaped properties in the FlatIron area.

Athletic Turf Mowing

Stratton FieldThe mowing crew is also responsible for mowing approximately 225 acres of athletic fields. These fields are mowed three times per week with a specialty mower than has the ability to cut turf to two inches in height. This insures a quality playing surface for the many groups and various sports teams that make use of the fields. That striped pattern with various designs seen on the athletic fields is a result of the specialty mowers. They are equipped with rollers to lay the grass down after it has been mowed. These patterns, or mowing directions, are changed every two weeks.

Open Space Mowing

Staff responsible for open space and week mowing oversees and maintains over 3,850 acres of open space. Open space, trails and other native grass areas throughout Broomfield are mowed five to six times a year, usually starting in late April. These staff members also maintain and repair soft trails that may be washed away after severe weather.
