From the Chief of Police

Thomas C. Deland
Chief of Police
Thomas C. Deland was appointed Chief of Police for the City and County of Broomfield in 1991. In 2001, after a state-wide election, Broomfield created its own city and county form of government.  As a result, the Chief of Police became the ex-officio sheriff of the county and assumed the additional duties of managing the county detention center, emergency management, and other county-related responsibilities.

Chief Deland began his law enforcement career in 1974 as a fingerprint examiner for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Identification Division, Washington D.C.  In 1977, he joined the Broomfield Police Department, serving in various operational assignments in the Patrol Division as a police officer, corporal, watch commander, and in the Investigations Division as a detective in the Property Crimes Unit, Crimes Against Persons Unit, and the Drug Unit.  In 1987, he was promoted to lieutenant with command assignments in the Investigations Division, Patrol Division, and Information Division until his appointment as Chief of Police in 1991.

Chief Deland holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Metropolitan State College, is a graduate of the 153rd session of the FBI National Academy (1988), and is a graduate of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar 53rd session (2006).

The Broomfield Police Department is organized into two bureaus and seven divisions. The Operations Bureau consists of the Patrol, Special Operations, and Investigations Divisions. The Support Services Bureau includes the Community Resources, Communications, Training, and Detention Divisions.
