On
November 15, 2001, the new City and County form of government began
operation in Broomfield and Chief Tom Deland became the
first chief of police and sheriff of the new
county.
Development of Broomfield continued as the
community became a destination location with the
addition of many attractions such as the FlatIron
Crossing shopping area and the
Broomfield
Event
Center.To maintain the high level of public safety
expected by Broomfield residents, many new
functions of the Police Department were added and
expanded.
After the inaugural year of the City and County, the
Police Department returned to the popular “mountain” shoulder
emblem.The simple design
with no border represents the unlimited possibilities for
exceptional police service, the gold lettering reflects the
Department’s high standards, and the mountains represent the
majestic Rocky Mountains.
The Police
Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team was organized
when the Department became a combined municipal and county law
enforcement agency.
The Police Department’s
challenge coin depicts the Patrol Division’s uniform pin that is
awarded to new police officers after successful completion of the
Field Training Program.

The Police Department’s Traffic
Unit was expanded in 2003 to provide services for the increased
motoring public traveling on Broomfield
streets and highways.
In 2006, the
BroomfieldEventCenter
opened serving as the home for minor league hockey and basketball as
well as concerts and other special events.
Soon after its
formation in 2001, the Broomfield Police Department’s Honor Guard
became a familiar and respected sight at Police Department, City and
County, and community formal ceremonies, special events, and
parades.

Development continued in the
southwest area of the City and County around the FlatIron Business
District.
The Detention Division Emergency Response Team responds
to all high risk disturbances involving inmates at the
Detention
Center.
In 2002, the City and County of
Broomfield Public Safety Communications Center was established to
provide communications services for both police and fire.
