Broomfield Police Department History

 2000s

On November 15, 2001, the new City and County form of government began operation in Broomfield and Chief Tom Deland became the first chief of police and sheriff of the new county.  Development of Broomfield continued as the community became a destination location with the addition of many attractions such as the FlatIron Crossing shopping area and the Broomfield Event Center.  To maintain the high level of public safety expected by Broomfield residents, many new functions of the Police Department were added and expanded.

After the inaugural year of the City and County, the Police Department returned to the popular “mountain” shoulder emblem.  The simple design with no border represents the unlimited possibilities for exceptional police service, the gold lettering reflects the Department’s high standards, and the mountains represent the majestic Rocky Mountains.

The Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team was organized when the Department became a combined municipal and county law enforcement agency.

The Police Department’s Traffic Unit was expanded in 2003 to provide services for the increased motoring public traveling on Broomfield streets and highways.

In 2006, the Broomfield Event Center opened serving as the home for minor league hockey and basketball as well as concerts and other special events.

Soon after its formation in 2001, the Broomfield Police Department’s Honor Guard became a familiar and respected sight at Police Department, City and County, and community formal ceremonies, special events, and parades.

Development continued in the southwest area of the City and County around the FlatIron Business District.

In 2002, the City and County of Broomfield Public Safety Communications Center was established to provide communications services for both police and fire.
