Public Education

Public Education is a primary focus of the Broomfield Police Department's Emergency Management Unit.  All-hazards public education is accomplished through strategic partnerships with the public education coordinators of the Police Department, North Metro Fire Rescue, Health and Human Services, and American Red Cross.

Public Education Coordinator Joleen Reefe works to organize programs and activities associated with "all-hazards" safety education and crime prevention information.  Presentations are available to citizens including local Boy Scout groups, Girl Scout groups, schools, businesses, etc., and include programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Police Department tours, Detention Facility tours, K-9 presentations, home security surveys, 72-hour preparedness, weather safety, and disaster planning.

Neighborhood Watch...It's Not Just Crime Prevention Any More!

You and your neighbors can learn to better protect yourself, your family, and your property.  Neighborhood Watch is a community network that enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with public safety agencies to prepare for "all hazards" in their communities.  For more information, visit http://www.citizencorps.gov/programs/watch.shtm.

It involves:

  • Neighbors getting to know each other and working together;
  • Getting to know your neighbors' special skills (medical, technical);
  • Citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities;
  • Implementation of overall home safety and crime prevention techniques, such as Operation Identification; and
  • Training in emergency preparedness, mitigation, and response to man-made or natural disasters.

Where do I start?

  • Talk to your neighbors to get them interested;
  • Contact the Broomfield Police Department's Public Education Coordinator at 720-887-2084 to find out about a program for your area;
  • Enlist your neighbors' help;
  • Host an introductory meeting;
  • Identify a "Block Captain" with your neighbors.

Duties of a Block Captain:
  • Act as liaison between residents, Police, and the Public Education Coordinator;
  • Contact new neighbors and explain the program;
  • Encourage neighborhood participation in Home Security Surveys, Operation Identification; and Emergency Preparedness training;
  • Distribute Neighborhood Watch and other informational materials;
  • Encourage active participation.

Crime Prevention and Community Policing

Crime prevention and community policing share a common purpose - reducing the threat of crime and making communities more safe and secure.  Crime prevention and community policing complement each other.  Community policing involves changing decision-making processes and creating new cultures within police departments.  Crime prevention provides information and skills that are essential to community policing, and is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Through crime prevention, community policing, and emergency preparedness education, you and your neighbors can learn to better protect yourself, your family, and your property.  Crime prevention improves the quality of life for every community member, and knowing how to increase your Personal Safety is the first step.  If you are concerned there may be a meth lab in your neighborhood, please visit www.nmtf.us for information on signs to watch for, and report it immediately.  For general crime prevention information, please visit http://www.metro-denvercrimestoppers.com/ For information on child safety, please visit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Blue Sky Bridge Child Advocacy Center, and the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Do you have questions you'd like to ask a police officer, but don't want to be pulled over to have that opportunity?  How about having Coffee With a Cop?  Please see the schedule for specific times and locations.

Crime Free Multi-Housing

The Broomfield Police Department works to build partnerships with the community to solve problems, including in rental-based housing areas. The approach to preventing crime in the multi-housing areas of Broomfield is no different than in residential blocks, except that the landlord, manager, or owner of multi-family unit plays an integral part in working together with tenants to fight crime.

In multi-family units, tenants need to report suspicious behavior to the police and to their landlord. Sometimes criminal activity is not discovered until the problem becomes extreme.  Some people – tenants and homeowners alike – are frightened to report illegal activity until they discover the "strength in numbers" of joining a community watch organization. Whether you call your efforts "apartment watch," "community pride," or "resident retention programs," the goal is the same: transforming a multi-housing complex into a safe community.

The Broomfield Police Department helps with the training and protection of tenants and landlords alike to enhance the sense of community and belonging, and developing neighbors who are more willing to do what it takes to keep their neighborhood safe and healthy.
