Property Crimes Information Bulletin

If You Have Been The Victim of a Property Crime

The information provided below will help you understand what is being done to investigate your case.  It also includes preventative measures you can take to reduce the risk of being a victim.

Police Procedures

  • All stolen items with recorded serial numbers or identifiable markings (i.e., social security number) are entered into a statewide and national computer system to improve the potential for property recovery.

  • Teletypes are sent to other agencies where the stolen items or suspects (if known) can be identified.

  • Teletypes from other agencies are checked daily.

  • Local pawn records are checked weekly.

  • Similar cases in other areas of our city are examined, as well as similar cases from other agencies.

  • A fingerprint comparison is made of known criminals who used the same methods used in your case.

  • Property held by the Broomfield Police Department is closely checked to return the property to the legal owner(s).

Victim Involvement

As a victim, you can assist the police by doing the following:

  • Make every effort to obtain serial numbers of items stolen (serial numbers are not written in owner's manuals, you must record them yourself).

  • Keep the investigating officer advised of any information you may learn that will be of assistance in the investigation.

  • Make sure you list all stolen items in your report as accurately as possible so officers of any department will have the best possible description.  Photographs and/or videotapes are helpful.

If you wish to inquire about your case, please call the Investigations Division at 303-438-6410, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Have your case number ready when you call.  You may also call Victim Services at 303-438-6429 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with any questions you may have regarding information on your case or eligibility for compensation or restitution.

Crime Prevention

Crime prevention is "the anticipation, recognition, and appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of some action to remove or reduce the risk."  This can be in the form of an elaborate alarm system or as simple as locking your car door.

Home or Business Security

Take measures to make yourself, your house, your apartment, or business more secure against future attacks or intruders.

  • Mark your valuable items with your social security number (especially those with no serial number).

  • Inventory all items.

  • Record serial numbers of items and keep your records in a safe place.

  • Consider placing expensive items, such as jewelry that is rarely worn, in a safe deposit box.

  • Maintain photographs of jewelry or antiques you may not want to engrave.

Expert Security Can Be Yours At No Cost

You can call the Public Education Coordinator at 720-887-2084 to have an officer conduct a security survey of your home or business and advise you on ways to make your property less vulnerable to crime.  The officer can help design a security plan for your premises that will be the most effective and least expensive for you.
