What are Wheelchairs?

Colorado Revised Statute 42-1-102(113) gives the following definition:

"Wheelchair" means a motorized or non-motorized wheeled device designed for use by a person with a physical disability.

Summary of laws regarding the use of Wheelchairs in Broomfield:

  • Wheelchairs SHALL travel on sidewalks when provided.

  • Wheelchairs SHALL travel on a road shoulder as far as practicable from the edge of the roadway when sidewalks are not provided.

  • Wheelchairs SHALL travel as near as practicable to an outside edge of the roadway when neither a sidewalk or road shoulder is available.

  • In the case of a two way roadway, Wheelchairs SHALL travel on the left side of the roadway facing approaching traffic.

Can Wheelchairs travel on public roadways?

YES.  Colorado Revised Statute 42-4-805(1) and Model Traffic Code 805(1) state in part:

Pedestrians walking or traveling in a wheelchair along and upon highways where sidewalks are not provided shall walk or travel only on a road shoulder as far as practicable from the edge of the roadway.  Where neither a sidewalk nor road shoulder is available, any pedestrian walking or traveling in a wheelchair along and upon a highway shall walk as near as practicable to an outside edge of the roadway and, in the case of a two-way roadway, shall walk or travel only on the left side of the roadway facing traffic that may approach from the opposite direction.

Are there any locations where Wheelchair travel is prohibited?
