Booster Stations
What's in those little buildings? They are pump stations
operated and maintained by the Public Works Utilities
Division. The small structures around town can be one of 5 water booster stations,
one of 12 wastewater lift stations, or a chlorination facility.
Water booster stations increase the operating pressure in the water
distribution system where gravity pressure is not adequate to serve
system demands or meet fire flow conditions. Wastewater lift
stations are located in low areas throughout the collection system.
They pump wastewater uphill to a higher elevation, where it can then
flow via gravity through the collection system to the wastewater
reclamation facility. Lift stations vary in size and type depending
on the amount of wastewater to pumped and how high the wastewater
has to be lifted.
The newest lift station accommodates the Anthem development in north Broomfield. Completed in 2006 at a cost of $4.03 million, the
station has six 150-horsepower pumps, with three sets of two pumps
running together in a series--a design that eliminated the need for
a second lift station. The ultimate flow design will accommodate 4.6
million gallons per day. The height the wastewater must be lifted in
approximately 264 feet.
