There are over
3,000 fire hydrants in the City and County of Broomfield, and the
number increases with new construction and development.
Fire hydrants are an important part of the water system. They provide fire
protection to residential, commercial, and industrial structures, as well as construction and street sweeping water.
The Utilities Division maintains hydrants twice a year. Maintenance includes flushing, pressure testing,
lubricating, and painting. Performing maintenance twice yearly assures that the hydrants are always ready for
emergency operation. Broomfield also replaces multiple hydrants each year because they are either old,
outdated styles or replacement parts are not available for reorder.
Flushing the fire hydrants annually with a high volume of water creates a scouring effect to clean out any
sediment or scaling buildup inside the pipeline. This is done not only to insure quality drinking water, but also
to help eliminate any taste or odor problems.
