About The Community Development Department


The Department of Community Development provides one-stop services for all planning, engineering and building activity within the City and County of Broomfield.

Services provided include enforcement of building codes, issuing of building permits, zoning regulation, and construction standards.

The department is also responsible for traffic engineering, current and long-range planning, geographic information systems (GIS), mapping, code compliance and administration of Broomfield’s capital improvements program (CIP).

Mission Statement


Assure that development and redevelopment within the community occur in such a manner as to enhance and complement Broomfield. Work with the community to assure that established standards are met for property maintenance.

The Department will work with and be a resource for the community, city and county departments, and others for reliable, accurate, and objective information in preparing and implementing adopted programs, city plans, ordinances, standards and regulations, policies, data trends and related areas of professional expertise. We will ensure that projects built throughout the community are built to a high level of quality.

Community Development will be closed on Thursday, 12/6/18  from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm for a holiday luncheon. 


Payment may be made in person with cash, check, or credit card. 


There will be a 2.6% per transaction fee assessed if you choose the credit card option. 

Effective May 1, 2018, a $27.00 fee will be assessed for any check returned for insufficient funds


Beekeeping Licenses

Beekeeping will be allowed in Broomfield single-family areas beginning September 11, 2015, once the beekeeping ordinance is effective. At that time, the Community Development Department will issue beekeeping licenses for a one-time fee of $25. Backyard Chicken Licenses

The Community Development Department issues licenses for Backyard Chickens for single-family residences. The ordinance allowing backyard chickens became effective Monday, December 9, 2013. The one-time fee is $25. Please keep in mind, some homeowners' associations do not allow backyard chickens. Backyard Chicken License Application
