What is Therapeutic Recreation?
The Therapeutic Recreation Program is designed to provide and enhance recreation opportunities for people of all ability levels and ages to participate in leisure services. We offer both specialized classes and inclusion opportunities.- Special Olympics

The Broomfield Therapeutic Recreation program offers year-round training for Special Olympics competitions. We provide the trained staff, fields, and a majority of the equipment (sport specific) to get you ready for the regional competitions if you chose to compete (competitions are optional for athletes). We are a recreation program that focuses on skill development, social skills, and fun!

In order to compete in a Special Olympics sanctioned tournament, you must have a Special Olympics medical on file signed by a physician. They are good for three years. Download the Athlete Participation medical form.
We offer a variety of fitness classes designed for individuals with a disability. Some classes are seasonal and others are year-round depending on the need.
Examples of TR fitness classes are:

In addition: We also offer nine Special Olympics sports which offer great fitness opportunities as well. The sports are (also listed under the Special Olympics tab) are Bowling, Basketball, Gymnastics, Swim Team, Soccer, Track & Field, Softball, Golf, Bocce ball. See Special Olympics tab for seasons.
We offer a variety of programs for individuals with disabilities. Programs include but not limited to are:
Game Night at the Derd- Saturday night social program.
Theatre Exploration with Backstory Theatre Program
9-1-1 What you need to know! Collaboration with the Broomfield Police Department.
Invent HQ maker space programs- screen printing, vinyl decals, knitting and more.
Community Outings- Flatirons Mall for Christmas shopping, Dinner out, Estes Park etc.
The Therapeutic Swim lessons are for individuals with a disability. They are for the beginning swimmer to learn the basic fundamentals. We offer group lessons which are much smaller than the traditional swim lesson and private swim lessons.
Group swim lesson are 1 instructor to 3 kids.
Private swim lessons are 1:1, you can also request semi-private if you have someone you would like to take a lesson with. To request a private swim lesson please email sstearns@broomfield.org.

When registering:
- Group: Participants who are independent or require minimal verbal prompting and minimal behaviors.
- 1:1: Participants who need physical assistance and/or additional support due to behavioral needs.
- A Therapeutic Participation Form must be filled out every two years and you can also acquire one at the front desk of either center.
Policies
- Participation is required at all programs!
- When dropping off participants please check in with a staff member or volunteer. If a participant will be using public transportation please notify staff at the beginning of the program.
- We do not provide personal care, i.e. toileting or feeding. If you need assistance you will need to provide an assistant.
- A Therapeutic Participation Form must be filled out every two years and you can also acquire one at the front desk of either center.
- Special Olympics requires a medical on file every three years, You can download the form from the Special Olympics Website.
Mainstream/ Inclusion
We offer assistance to individuals with or without disabilities to recreate together. To request inclusion assistance, check the appropriate box on the registration form. If registering online please call Rachel Robbins, C.T.R.S. at 303.460.6924. Please allow three weeks prior to the start of class to allow us to assist in providing the necessary support.
Our staff and trained volunteers work hard to provide the highest level of experience possible to the participants. When registering please allow enough time before the class starts, and register according to the needs of the participant. Thanks for your cooperation in helping us keep this program a success.
If you see a class offered in the program guide and would like to participate but need assistance, please let us know. A minimum of three weeks is needed to allow us time to provide the support you need to attend that class. We look forward to providing recreation for everyone.
