On May 11, 2021 Council authorized an agreement with Goodland Construction, Inc. for the 1st Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard Intersection improvements - Turn Lane project.
Work to repair concrete will begin on the east side of Sheridan Boulevard in June 2021. It will take approximately 2 weeks. The project will then pause until the traffic signal poles are delivered in September 2021. The turn lane work will then proceed on the west side of Sheridan Boulevard taking approximately 8 weeks to complete.
The purpose of the project is to alleviate traffic congestion, improve vehicle capacity, and create better traffic flow at the intersection. The eastbound left turn volume exceeds the capacity of the single left turn lane during the noon and evening peak hours on weekdays and on Saturdays. Significant backups can occur on East 1st Avenue at these times. Currently, there is a single eastbound left turn lane from East 1st Avenue, and a shared through/right-turn lane. An additional left turn lane will be added and the existing turn lane will be lengthened to increase the capacity for that movement and relieve congestion at the intersection. The project will also improve the pedestrian crossings and handicap ramps on both the west and east side of the intersection.
