[ARCHIVED] Ajax Analytics Second Quarter Report

Ajax Analytics and Colorado State University staff have completed the Second Quarter Report for Broomfield's Air Quality Program.

Ajax Analytics and Colorado State University staff have completed the Second Quarter Report for Broomfield's Air Quality Program.  The Second Quarter report is linked here.

This report addresses air quality measurements and data collected in the time period from April 1, 2019 through June 30, 2019.   Some findings from the report include the following:

  • Benzene and BTEX (sum of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes) increased slightly at the Interchange site, but remained appreciably below health criteria levels and within the seasonal distribution.

  • Total volatile organic compound (TVOC) concentration increased at the Interchange site over the period.

  • Citizen complaints increased during May and June and many were related to odors detected near the Interchange site.

  • Based on established chemical signatures and the increase in VOCs, odor complaints at the Interchange site probably stem from drilling operations during this time period.

  • Despite the observations at Interchange, overall concentrations of key air quality parameters (benzene, BTEX,TVOC, ethane and methane) decreased from Q1 to Q2, due primarily to seasonality.

  • IoT sensors detected data air quality events that coincided with some of the odor complaints.

Representatives of Ajax Analytics and Colorado State University will present the report to City Council and answer questions at a Study Session on August 27, 2019, at 6 p.m. The report will be posted on Broomfield's oil and gas webpage and the Ajax/Broomfield portal.
