Charters detail the structure and powers of a local government. Broomfield’s Charter is the document that defines the powers and duties of the Mayor, City Council and the city’s leaders. Broomfield became a City and County in November 2001, and its home rule charter has been in effect since 1974. The Charter Review Committee (CRC) was established to review and analyze the home rule charter and the city council has set the priority of the CRC to be a comprehensive review of the form of government set forth in the charter.
Broomfield currently has a council-manager form of government, with an elected at-large Mayor and 10 elected council members, two from each ward. The city council is currently structured to be part-time. The city council sets policy and adopts the budget, while the city manager is responsible for the day-to-day activities.
The CRC’s seven members are tasked to advise the city council on areas where amendments are desired and want to be sure that they are representing the bulk of Broomfield residents. Make your voice heard on this important matter that affects all Broomfield residents by attending an upcoming meeting or townhall to see what is being discussed. Please come to our next Town Hall Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023 at 6 p.m. in the Heritage Room at the Health and Human Services Building. The Charter Review Committee will have a facilitated discussion about possible changes to the Charter.
