Seven years ago, in 2014, I was given the distinct honor and privilege to be hired by the City and County of Broomfield to serve as the Chief of Police. On May 24, 2021 I began my 40th year in law enforcement, a monumental milestone for me both professionally and personally. With such a milestone comes a lot of reflection; it is with both tremendous gratitude for the past seven years, and with excitement for the future, that I announce my plans to retire on January 11, 2022.
For the past seven years I have worked alongside my team to build and reinforce the foundation of the Broomfield Police Department, both culturally and operationally. It has always been my goal to leave this department in the best place possible in order to ensure a continued high level of service for the Broomfield community. I am extremely proud of the BPD, and I take great pride in being a part of this wonderful city and county.
Please know my announcement is a celebratory one that honors the partnership and service I have experienced as part of the City and County of Broomfield. During my tenure as Chief, the police department’s partnership with the City Manager’s Office, Mayor, and City Council has been a top priority based on mutual respect and admiration. The support the BPD has received from city leaders has been, and continues to be, invaluable.
The Chief of Police is a critical position for both the department and the city and county, and will require a minimum of four to five months to recruit, evaluate, and select the next leader. In making my announcement early, my hope is it allows the organization space to develop a timeline and recruitment plan that welcomes a variety of qualified applicants. I look forward to seeing what new leadership brings to this outstanding department, and amazing city and county.
I am beyond thankful for every moment of my years in Broomfield. I will continue to serve with the same dedication and commitment in the upcoming months to ensure a thoughtful and smooth transition for the next leader of the Broomfield Police Department. Gary Creager was appointed Chief of Police for the City and County of Broomfield in December 2014. In addition to traditional police services, Chief Creager also oversees the detention center along with other county-related responsibilities.
The Broomfield Police Department is organized into two bureaus and seven divisions. The Operations Bureau consists of Patrol, Special Operations, and Investigations. The Support Services Bureau includes Administration, Communications (Dispatch), Information and Court Security, and the Detention Center. See our full organizational chart.

The Broomfield Police Department utilizes a team of public information officers. They are responsible for meeting with the press, addressing any inquiries from the media, and serving as the voice of the department.
The on-call public information officer can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the Communications Center (dispatch) at 303-438-6400. You can also email Lead Public Information Officer Rachel Welte here (does not always respond to email on weekends and holidays).
