Traffic Accident Reports
The Broomfield Police Department is sorry to learn that you have been involved in a traffic accident. We realize that accident reporting can be a difficult and confusing process; however, we hope to help you by providing the information below. If you were involved in an accident in which Broomfield Police responded, a report was taken and submitted to the State of Colorado for you and no further action is required. The officer should have provided you with a reference number to report to your insurance company. If you have any questions about your accident, please contact the Broomfield Police Department at 303.438.6400.
Obtaining a Copy of an Accident Report
Obtain a copy of a traffic accident report (within 24 hours of being scanned into the system) using our online service at buycrash.com. There is a charge of $5 plus a nominal fee for using this service. You will need the date of the accident, the Broomfield Police Department case number, and a valid credit card to access your report for a quick and easy download. Reports can also be obtained from the Broomfield Police Department Records Unit at 7 DesCombes Drive, for $5 by mail request, or walk-in service, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Records Unit is dedicated to ensuring these requests are processed quickly and efficiently.
If Broomfield Police did not respond to your accident, you are still required to report it. Below are a few situations that may constitute the need to report an accident after the fact:
Broomfield was on accident alert and:
- no injury or fatality was involved;
- none of the drivers were suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol;
- none of the drivers failed to provide proof of identity or insurance;
- no other issues requiring police intervention existed;
- the accident did not involve damage to a City or other governmental vehicle or property, and;
- the vehicles and drivers involved were present at the scene and the driver, vehicle, and insurance information was exchanged.
The accident occurred on private property and:
- no injury or fatality was involved;
- none of the drivers were suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol;
- none of the drivers failed to provide proof of identity or insurance;
- no other issues requiring police intervention existed;
- the vehicles and drivers involved were present at the scene and the driver, vehicle, and insurance information was exchanged;
- there was no major damage to another's property such as a vehicle through a building; and
- no one insisted that the police respond.
The accident was a hit and run and:
- the victim left the scene of the accident prior to reporting it; and
- there is no suspect or vehicle information.
If one of the above circumstances applies to you, you must choose one of the following options:
1. You may come to the front lobby of Broomfield Police headquarters, 7 DesCombes Drive, and complete the State of Colorado Traffic Accident Report.
If you choose Option 1, you will complete the report at the Police Department. There is an instructional cover page that accompanies the report. Please follow the directions carefully. A reference number and a copy of your accident report will be given to you at that time. The Broomfield Police will mail your report to the State of Colorado.
2. You may print the report from here for handwritten completion.
If you choose Option 2, you will print the State of Colorado Traffic Accident Report, complete it, and mail it to the State of Colorado Motor Vehicle Division Traffic Records, Denver, CO 80261-0016. There is an instructional cover page that accompanies the form. Please follow the directions carefully. It is suggested that you keep a copy of the report for your records. You will be able to call the Department of Motor Vehicles at 303-205-5793 two weeks after you mail your report for a reference number.
3. You may use the Colorado State Patrol Online Accident Reporting System.
If you choose Option 3, you will complete the online State of Colorado Traffic Accident Report and submit it electronically. Please follow the on-line instructions carefully. Once successfully submitted, a reference number will be provided to you.
Regardless of which option you choose, all reports should be completed and submitted as soon as possible following your accident.
In addition, you may wish to call your insurance agent and advise him/her of the accident and follow their instructions. Your insurance company may request your reference number when filing a claim.
The Broomfield Police Department does not keep copies of any accident reports generated from the above options.
Will enforcement action be taken at a later date against either driver in a "cold" accident report situation?
No, neither the Broomfield Police Department nor Colorado State Patrol will take enforcement action against any driver for "causing the accident". At this point, the report is prepared to satisfy a State of Colorado requirement that the accident be reported and for insurance purposes.
Broomfield Police will respond to make a report on a traffic accident when:
- vehicles are disabled due to damage;
- it involves a fatality or an injury requiring medical attention;
- alcohol or drugs are involved;
- the accident is an alleged hit and run;
- there is damage to damage to public property other than wildlife (i.e., a highway stop sign); or
- any property damage accident in which the reporting party is not in, or has no, contact with the driver(s).
