Step 2: Purchase

Why It Matters

Once you’ve identified opportunities, it’s time to select and install equipment that fits your goals and budget while taking advantage of available incentives.

Home Energy Efficiency First

Before going electric, you want to ensure your home has a tight envelope, meaning your home can hold heat in the winter when heated and cool air in the summer when cooled. If you’re unsure of your home’s envelope, consider getting a home energy assessment. Common home envelope upgrades include:

  • Sealing air leaks
  • Attic and wall insulation improvements
  • High-performance window installation

These upgrades improve home comfort and can reduce the size and cost of electric equipment.

If your home has air leaks and drafty windows, your heating and cooling systems work overtime to keep your home at a comfortable temperature, adding more stress on the systems and costing you more money.

Electric Appliances

Replace fossil fuel appliances with efficient electric alternatives:

  • Cold climate heat pumps
  • Air source heat pumps with gas or electric backup
  • Heat pump water heaters
  • Induction cooktops

An electrician can help determine whether your electrical panel needs an upgrade.

Qualified contractors

Installing electric appliances often requires specialized expertise. Xcel Energy and United Power provide contractor lists and resources to help residents connect with qualified professionals experienced in heat pumps, electric water heaters and other electric technologies. Using a contractor from these lists may be required to access certain rebates and incentives.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Considering an EV?

  • Compare models and ranges
  • Explore home charging options
  • Review available incentives

Many EVs can charge using a standard outlet 120V, making them accessible for many households. Upgrade to a 240V outlet, similar to what your dryer would plug into, for faster at-home charging.
