Step 1: Plan

Why It Matters

Planning helps you understand your current energy use, set priorities and identify upgrades that deliver the most value for your home.

Know Your Starting Point

Start with your utility bill:

  • How much energy do you use?
  • When do you use it the most (think time of day and days of the week)?
  • How much does your bill cost you? Consider taking two six-month averages - summer and fall compared to winter and spring.

Understanding your baseline makes it easier to spot savings opportunities and prepare for future upgrades.

Set Your Goals

Electrification looks different for everyone. Consider the things that matter most to you:

  • Comfort and temperature control
  • Indoor air quality
  • Safety
  • Reducing emissions
  • Preparing for future energy costs
  • Lowering upfront costs with incentives

Identify Your Opportunities

Use these prompts to guide your planning:

Home Energy Efficiency

Ask yourself: Could better insulation, sealing air leaks or replacing windows improve your comfort and reduce energy loss?

Electric Appliances

Ask yourself: What gas (or other fuel) heating systems do you have (furnace, stove, water heater)? Which of those could be replaced with electric appliances?

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Ask yourself: Are you planning to purchase or lease a vehicle soon? Do you have EV charging access either at or near your home or work?

Renewable Energy

Ask yourself: Is your residence a good fit for solar? If not, could a community solar subscription work?

Energy-Saving Habits

Ask yourself: How can you use less energy each day or shift use to off-peak times to save money?

Put It All Together

You don’t need all the answers now. Choose one place to start! Step 2 will help you explore contractors, programs and incentives.
